Shortly afterwards she is arrested for being a Communist and is sent to prison, where she has her daughter, Carlotta. Like her mother, Zedé is a talented seamstress and is also very smart, so she receives a scholarship and becomes a teacher. Her family is poor but her life is very peaceful, so she doesn’t realize she lives in poverty. The story begins with Zedé as a young girl in South America.
